Protein Skimmers

Remove dissolved and fine organic material before it adds to treatment demand.

Protein skimmers, or foam fractionators, use air-water contact to separate surface-active dissolved and fine organic compounds from suitable water streams. Marine Blue integrates skimming where the water chemistry and treatment strategy support the process.

01

Operating principle

Fine bubbles provide a large air-water interface. Surface-active material adheres to the bubble surfaces, rises as foam and is collected as a concentrated waste stream. Performance depends strongly on salinity, organic characteristics, bubble production, contact and hydraulic conditions.

02

Role in the system

A skimmer can complement mechanical filtration by targeting material that may pass through screens or remain dissolved. It does not replace solids capture, biofiltration, oxygen management or disinfection.

03

Applications

  • Marine and brackish RAS
  • Shrimp and crab systems where appropriate
  • Hatchery and broodstock treatment
  • Side-stream organic-load management

04

Integration requirements

Coordinate the skimmer with pumps, air supply, water levels, ozone if used, off-gas treatment, foam-waste drainage and downstream processes. Materials and safeguards must suit the selected operating method.

05

Operation and maintenance

Regular care includes cleaning contact surfaces and collection cups, checking injectors or diffusers, maintaining flow and air supply, managing foam consistency and inspecting waste lines.

06

Customer value

Where applicable, foam fractionation can reduce fine and dissolved organic loading, improve water appearance and support downstream treatment stability. Suitability and performance depend on the actual water and process.
